Local World use Pugpig to deliver ten new regional news apps in under seven weeks

LocalWorldBlogMaster

Kaldor and Local World are celebrating the launch of ten new fully-interactive, regional newspaper apps using Pugpig. In just seven weeks the companies have conceived, designed, built and launched the Android-first titles which offer readers a brand new digital-only evening edition of their local newspaper on their phones and tablets.

Launched last week are new evening editions for the Bristol Post, Cambridge News, Derby Telegraph, Gloucestershire Echo, Hull Daily Mail, Leicester Mercury, Nottingham Post, South Wales Evening Post, The Sentinel and The Plymouth Herald. Published Monday – Friday at 5pm,the new regional apps offer readers a collection of the most popular news stories from throughout the day.

Kaldor and Local World also worked closely with Google ensuring that the launch was a rapid and smooth process. iPad and iPhone versions of the apps will also be available soon.

Matt Kelly, Group Digital Director at Local World says “So many readers and journalists grew up with the evening edition of their local paper being the pulse of their city. We’ve taken the essence of this and worked very hard with Google to develop a simple and brilliant new set of apps that will inform and entertain our readers on their way back from work every evening.”

Jonny Kaldor, CEO and co-founder of Kaldor says “To launch even a single app used to be a time consuming and costly exercise, but not any more. Our work with Local World shows that with Pugpig, we are now able to build beautiful and feature-rich content apps in a matter of days, without compromise.”

Google Material Design Changes

In the past few weeks, we have been working closely with Google to update our Android Pugpig for Magazines and Pugpig for Continuous Publishing app containers and update our user interfaces in order to align with material design. In particular we have implemented Android toolbars, simplified the layout and now support overflow behaviour. Through adding some subtle shadows to indicate layers, the Table of Contents now overlays the content instead of bumping the page over.

Content apps can now be built in a day

Fast-icon-main

With London basking in the success of tech companies in the lead up to London Technology Week, we explore how the app software industry has changed and how the time it takes to launch an app has been slashed over the past few years.

Gone are the times where an app took four months to build, and where beautiful, interactive apps were just for big companies with big budgets and their top tier titles. Building an engaging app is now easier and more cost efficient than ever due to the development of reusable frameworks such as Pugpig.

When we built our first app fours years ago, it took us 120 days; last year we got it down to 30 days and now with our out-of-the-box Express product, content owners are able to build an app in as little as a day. This significant reduction in time is entirely down to the application of reusable frameworks which have been developed on the back of a better understanding of the common features desired by content owners.

Jonny Kaldor, CEO and Co-Founder of Pugpig says: “Pugpig provides all content owners (big and small) with the ability to develop and trial new products at almost no cost: pull together a content proposition, brand it, stick it in an app container, launch it and trial it with readers for almost zero investment.”

With three apps being built in one day during our Charity Hack Day in May it has never been more clear that out-of-the-box, customisable and cloud based platforms, are enabling content owners of all shapes and sizes to create beautiful, innovative and engaging apps for all audiences no matter what the time frame. Ultimately, the question is no longer why should you launch an app, it’s why wouldn’t you?

Web Reader updates

This week, we’ve been improving our web reader product and aligning features with iOS and Android so it can be offered out-of-the-box with set configuration and theming options. If you move to our new distribution service you can get a webreader working with your content with no additional development – much easier than hosting it yourself.

We’ve also added new features like smart banners, ‘next’ and ‘previous’ thumbnails, as well as creating the ability to embed widget capability – to add the web reader as an icon to your own website if you wish.

The last thing to keep an eye out for is cross-edition search – we’re currently developing this into our webreader and will provide more information soon.
