PE-Blog copy

Professional Engineering (PE) is the monthly membership publication of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The IMechE is one of the fastest growing professional engineering institutions. Headquartered in London, but with operations around the world, the Institution has over 111,000 members in more than 140 countries, working at the heart of the most important and dynamic industries.

Their new app (available on iOS, Android and Web) allows you to access the latest content from the PE magazine as soon as it’s published, as well as exclusive other digital-only content. Depending on your interests and location you can choose either a UK or a Global edition of the app. You can switch editions at any time. PE is published by Caspian Media on behalf of the IMechE.

Three great charities take part in our first ever Hack Day

Last Friday we held our first ever Hack Day where we invited charities to come along and build an interactive content app in a day. The action-packed day started at 9am with an introduction to Pugpig and a quick training session on using Pugpig Express, before it was all stations go.

Our three charities (Place2Be, Stroke Association and Pancreatic Cancer Action) spent the day conceiving, designing and building apps to aid their fundraising efforts and to improve donor communications. On hand to help with any design, code or app-build questions were a bunch of the team from Kaldor, plus Ben Edwards, Head of Front-End Development at Clock.

The teams were given thirty minutes to plan their app. this included thinking about their publishing model (continuously vs edition-based), their audience and their content. Once they had these things planned they moved onto the design stage where they worked with JCJ, Dan and Ben to design their apps and to create any new page layouts.

After a quick break for lunch our charities put all of this together and built their apps. It was at this stage they branded the app container and created their content, and Alex was on hand to help with this part.

Once the apps were built our charities then gave a quick demo of their app and a presentation on its future to our panel of judges from The Economist and Kaldor. The competition was close, but Pancreatic Cancer Action were crowned winners. They are hoping to launch their new fundraising app in June, and we’ll work closely with them over the next few weeks and months, helping them with any technical support they might need.

We had a fantastic day, and it was great to set such worthwhile causes up with beautiful apps. Thanks very much to Incisive Media who lent us their offices for the day, Robin and Suprio from The Economist who gave up their afternoons to judge the apps, Ben from Clock for being a huge help on the day, and of course our charities for taking part and for proving that beautiful apps really can be built in just one day.

It is with great excitement that the Kaldor team has launched a brand new collection of Pugpig products. Released last week, content owners can now opt from a choice of four different hosting options when purchasing Pugpig to create beautiful, interactive and engaging apps.

For the past four years we have been working with clients to create award-winning apps around the world. This new set of products opens up Pugpig to a much broader audience, as there is no longer the needs to manage any technology – instead, Pugpig does it all for you. Content owners from businesses of all sizes can now reap the rewards of a Pugpig-powered app.

The products are (in a nutshell):

Pugpig Express – is our entry level fully hosted service. You sign in, generate your app and use the Pugpig Express theme to deliver your content. No technical expertise required at all.

Pugpig Professional – is for publishers who need to get their hands a little dirty, we host a dedicated CMS for you, giving you the ability to create your own themes and content types.

Pugpig Connect –  is suited for publishers who want to hook up to their own CMS to deliver content through the Pugpig Distribution Service into the Pugpig app containers.

Pugpig Toolkit – offering full unadulterated access to Pugpig software – typically suited for people who want to do some serious customisation both at the back-end and also using the Pugpig app framework SDK.

Not only are these products faster and easier to use, they are now available on a monthly payment plan, so there is almost no up-front investment and no commitment. And prices start from only £300 per month, so using Pugpig is now better value than ever before.

It’s Pugpig as you’ve always loved it, but simpler, better and faster.

Jonny Kaldor, our CEO says “We’re really excited about our new range of products. Not only are we now able to offer our products to a whole new set of content owners, but we’re also making it simpler and faster for all our customers to create their apps. We’re now able to create beautiful apps in a day – this is going to be a game changer…”
